Chapter Eight

Nate opened his eyes slowly, his entire body feeling relaxed even as he felt a twinge here and there. He smiled at the memory of what had given him those twinges even as he reached across the bed for Joe, his hand coming up empty.

Lifting his head, he looked around the room. It was obvious that Joe wasn’t in the bedroom. The moonlight shining through the window gave him just enough light to see everything. And Joe was not here.

He rolled to the side of the bed and reached for his clothes. He quickly pulling on his jeans and shirt before racing out the bedroom door and down the stairs. Reaching the first floor, he could hear noises coming from the kitchen.

Hesitant, he walked slowly towards the kitchen. The last time he had heard noises, he had found a stranger in his house. Who would he find this time? He was hoping to find Joe, which was why he felt disappointed when he spotted Maryann sitting at the dining table.

“Hey, Maryann, where’s Joe?” he asked as he walked in and she looked up.

Maryann quickly looked down at her cup of tea. She looked nervous. “He didn’t tell you?”

“Uh, no,” Nate replied, turning a little red. “He kind of left before I woke up.”

“He…uh…he has pack business to attend to,” Maryann replied, her hands fidgeting with her teacup.

Nate looked at her, noting her agitation. “Maryann, what’s wrong?

What has you so upset?” he asked as he sat down next to her. He Full Moon Mating

wondered if Daniel had told her about his ability to read people’s emotions.

“I…I’m just upset over this whole business with that man.”

“You mean the one that broke into the house?” he asked curiously, wondering what Maryann knew about it. “Well, I don’t know who he is, and I’m completely puzzled that Joe let him go after he went through Joe’s files, but I figure that Joe—”

“He went through Joe’s files?” Maryann squeaked, turning to look at Nate in concern.

“Yeah, why do you think I knocked him out and tied him up?”

“Tell me exactly what happened, Nate.”

A little confused, Nate began telling Maryann what he knew. “I was waiting for Joe to get home when I heard the front door open.

Thinking it was him, I went into the living room, but he wasn’t there.

I heard noise coming from the office, so I—”

“You didn’t let him in?”

“Of course not. I don’t know him. I would never admit anyone into the house that I didn’t know. Not unless Joe told me to.”

“Okay, so what happened then?”

“I went into the office, and there was that man. He was going through the files Joe keeps in his filing cabinet. I didn’t know who he was, and I don’t think he had Joe’s permission to do that, so I grabbed that wolf statue off of the sideboard and knocked him out and tied him before calling Joe.”

“Did you talk to this man at all?”

Nate shook his head. He was even more surprised when Maryann grabbed his hands, looking intently at him.
